From the States:
Sisal is a universally favored natural fiber, popularized by its affordable, and therefore abundant, use in area rugs. The adoration for sisal endures because it adds a sense of class and warmth to a room, proving successful in a variety of installations. Combined with white, it provides a heavenly Hamptons vibe. Paired with more formal furniture and accessories, it oozes sophistication and elegance.
There are so many to choose from today, but I especially love Stark Carpet’s range. My favorite of all is the “Natura” sisal. I have seen this pattern used in dining rooms, living rooms, bedrooms, libraries, and as stair runners. All are equally beautiful in appearance, and the natural fiber has been proven extremely durable.
One of my favorite carpet lines that I have come across is Armadillo & Co. They offer a wide variety of textures and patterns, all handmade. I love them especially because their proceeds go toward supporting education in the weavers’ village schools. Their hemp collection (shown below) is so creative and fun. Woven into whimsical shapes and patterns, they are the perfect entrance, nursery, or office area rug. While from a completely different plant species, hemp matches the durable, lasting qualities of sisal.
Bridge the Gap:
Originated in the States but now offered in Sydney and across Australia, Dash and Albert rugs stand the test of time. I have personally used them in several homes and adore them for their affordability and range of patterns. Just like Stark and Armadillo & Co, they have perfected the sisal look. A favorite is “Wave,” blending the classic appearance of sisal with a more coastal feel.
Finally, I leave you with a favorite room of mine done by Mark Sikes that features sisal beautifully. While he hails from the States, this look could be easily utilized by Aussies who so admire this neutral, fresh take on a room.
Whether you prefer the more tailored “Natura” by Stark, the creative hemp varieties by Armadillo & Co, or a transitional blend by Dash & Albert, natural fiber rugs will continue to be an absolute favorite option for adding a level of timeless taste to any room.
Do you have questions about sisal vs. hemp vs. seagrass? I’d love to help you navigate your way through the (sometimes overwhelming) task of finding the perfect natural fiber rug!
